This course aims to build students' confidence in a range of mediums and enable them to build a strong portfolio for an application to their desired programme. Besides helping with their programme application, students will also gain a strong technical foundation which will not only allow them to enter the schools, but to excel within their programmes.
We do not believe in a fixed formula for a successful application. Every student has different strengths and talents- the key is to express their unique style.
Some of the mediums taught include charcoal, pencil, watercolour and acrylic. Please note that our classes will not be jumping between various mediums every few weeks- it takes time and practice to master a medium, especially for watercolour and acrylic.
Students need to be self-motivated with a strong interest in art- if your child does not have sufficient interest in the subject, we recommend taking a look at our other courses. Please do not apply for these programmes just so your child can get a place in their school of choice- it will only hurt them in the long run!
Please visit the following websites for further reading on the programmes. ROKU Atelier is in no way affiliated to any of the institutions mentioned.
Youth Portfolio Programme
Q: Can I request for additional portfolio sessions? Will this class be enough to get my child into the programmes?
Depending on your child's ability and level of interest, once a week is sufficient to improve their skills and to build a good porfolio. Time away from the classroom to explore their own interests and art style feeds into the development of their art practice. Putting too much stress on them to rush their portfolio and progress can be counter-intuitive.
However, should you feel that they need additional help closer to the application deadlines, you may arrange for extra optional sessions (at our studio's discretion) to boost their application.
Q: What are some future career options for my child if they learn art/go to an art school?
Learning art from a young age doesn't just open up the doors for your child to become an artist, it can also lay the foundations for future careers in design (graphic, fashion, product, interiors, automotive), marketing, photography, videography and architecture, just to name a few. And if your child has the passion and talent to become to next David Hockney, what's stopping them?
Q: What is the success rate of your students getting into the programmes?
At this moment, 100% of the students who have come to us for help with their SOTA applications (2019 and 2020) have gained entry to the school. However, please do not take this as an indication that your child will definitely get into their desired programme after joining our course. This usually has a lot to do with their own passion, level of maturity, openness to learning and hard work.
Q: I am already enrolled in one of the specialised programmes but I need additional help. The lessons in school are only once a week. I think my classmates are all taking classes outside, and I'm not learning enough in school. Can you help?
We have been approached by students/parents who feel that they are unable to keep up with the art programmes in school. While there are exceptions, the Art Elective Programme can sometimes provide insufficient guidance to students in terms of specific techniques and skills, and instead choosing to focus on a broad syllabus. As such, many of the students who excel in this programme usually attend classes outside.
Many students can end up losing confidence in themselves because of this. If this sounds familiar to you, do get in touch with us and we can advise on the help we provide.
We believe in providing long-term solutions and helping to build a strong skill base for our students, instead of offering quick fixes.
